Belize is known for its rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and ancient history—but behind many of the powerful images that showcase the country to the world are passionate photographers dedicated to capturing its beauty. Recently, Visuals by Glenn Patrick (VBGP) had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with renowned photographer Mark Crayden, whose work has helped document and share Belize’s incredible story through photography.
Our time together took us across the Cayo District, exploring ancient Maya sites, cultural traditions, and some of the most stunning natural locations in the country.
Who Is Mark Crayden?
Mark Crayden is a well-known photographer whose work focuses on Belize’s landscapes, people, and cultural heritage. Through his photography tours and workshops, he brings together creatives and travelers who want to experience Belize in a deeper and more meaningful way.
His approach to photography goes beyond simply taking pictures—it’s about understanding the history, culture, and environment that make each location unique. Through this perspective, he has inspired photographers and travelers from around the world to explore Belize through a creative lens.
Exploring the Ancient Maya City of Xunantunich
One of the highlights of the experience was visiting Xunantunich, one of Belize’s most impressive Maya archaeological sites. Located just outside San Ignacio, this ancient city sits on a ridge overlooking the Mopan River and offers spectacular views of the surrounding jungle.
The towering El Castillo pyramid, one of the tallest structures in Belize, stands as a powerful reminder of the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Maya civilization. The site provides incredible opportunities for photography, with its intricate stone carvings, expansive plazas, and dramatic jungle backdrop.
Discovering the History of Cahal Pech
Another fascinating stop was Cahal Pech, a Maya site located on a hill overlooking San Ignacio town. While smaller than some other archaeological sites, Cahal Pech offers a unique glimpse into ancient Maya life.
With its plazas, temples, and residential structures, the site provides a quiet and intimate setting to explore history while capturing the architectural beauty that has stood for centuries.
Experiencing Traditional Chocolate Making
Belize’s cultural experiences are just as remarkable as its landscapes. One memorable part of the journey was participating in a traditional chocolate-making experience, where we learned about the ancient Maya method of turning cacao beans into chocolate.
The process involves roasting cacao beans, grinding them with traditional tools, and mixing them with natural ingredients to create rich, authentic chocolate. Watching and photographing this process offered a deeper appreciation for a tradition that has been passed down for generations.
Exploring the Natural Wonders of Pine Ridge
The journey continued into the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, one of Belize’s most beautiful natural regions.
Rio Frio Cave
Rio Frio Cave is known for its massive limestone entrance, one of the largest cave openings in Belize. Walking through the cave reveals impressive natural formations and a river that flows through its cool interior, creating a dramatic environment for exploration and photography.
Big Rock Falls
Another breathtaking location in Pine Ridge is Big Rock Falls, where water cascades down granite rock formations into a clear pool below. Surrounded by lush forest and towering rocks, the falls provide an incredible setting for capturing the natural beauty of Belize.
Visiting the San Antonio Women’s Cooperative
One of the most meaningful stops during the tour was the San Antonio Women’s Cooperative, a community initiative dedicated to preserving traditional Maya culture.
Visitors can experience traditional pottery-making, cooking methods, and cultural demonstrations that highlight the rich heritage of the Maya people. Watching the artisans carefully craft pottery and prepare traditional foods was both inspiring and educational.
The cooperative plays an important role in supporting local families while preserving cultural traditions for future generations.
A Memorable Collaboration
Collaborating with Mark Crayden was an inspiring experience that combined creativity, exploration, and cultural appreciation. From the ancient pyramids of Xunantunich and Cahal Pech, to the natural beauty of Rio Frio Cave and Big Rock Falls, and the cultural traditions shared at the San Antonio Women’s Cooperative, the journey highlighted the incredible diversity of the Cayo District.
Experiences like these remind us that photography is not just about capturing images—it’s about telling meaningful stories and sharing the beauty, history, and culture of Belize with the world.
